A quick story:

One day I was eating lunch in a diner whose placemats had advertisements on them. One of those ads looked a lot like this:

Now, there's nothing really wrong with this advertisement. Reading it I know what Jane does and how I can contact her, which is a great start.

Problem is, Jane hasn't earned my business just yet. In order to earn my business, there's a bit more information that I may need. I'd like to know what Jane charges. Since I'll be letting her in my home, I might want a few customer testomonials to ease any concerns I might have. I may even want to see some pictures of Jane's work so that I know she's good at what she does.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not claiming that Jane messed up her ad (she did what she could with the space she had), and I'm certainly not claiming that Jane wouldn't freely give me the information that I need to hire her. The problem is, in order to get what I want I need to call her, which involves a fair degree of commitment on my part. Additionally, I may not wish to call her while I'm eating, and her phone number and e-mail address aren't exactly easy for me to remember.

Now, if Jane had a web page, she could very easily put the address in the ad. I could then get all the information that I need to do business with her, and even set an appointment through her web site. Additionally, she might get customers who simply search for something along the lines of "cleaning services in pottstown". Jane could even change her e-mail address from janewoe1381979@hotmail.com to something a bit more professional, along the lines of jane@janescleaning.com.
